Chobot Challenge Trail Race and 200-miler notes

I did say in my last note that it would probably be a long while before I posted again, but I didn't think it would be quite this long.  Maybe I'll get around to posting what happened between then and now  - a 200-mile trail race in Australia, the Sydney Marathon, a 6-day adventure run in Newfoundland, and a local 8-mile trail race.

I was in need of some motivation for today's race, because I'm tired (this was my 39th race this year), I haven't done any speed training in ages, and I'm still aerobically compromised for some unknown reason.  It turns out that the ARRS single age world record was a mere 1:09:45, so I decided I would run that pace (7:29) until I couldn't.

I was right on pace at mile 5.5, but I could feel that it was going to be tough.  I kept up the pace for 2 miles more, and with a mile and a half to go, I began to think I had a chance.  Then I got the dry heaves - a pretty sure sign that you've exceeded what you're trained to do.  After that brief bout, I managed to return to something close to pace, but it was all over.  I started getting the heaves again a hundred yards from the finish and I had to walk half the remaining distance.

I missed by a little less than 2 minutes, which was disappointing but totally understandable.  I was proud that I could give every last ounce of energy available to me.

This week my target was 7:30 per mile.  Next week it's 18 minutes per mile!  The Javelina Jundred 100-mile trail race.  Predicted high? 94 degrees.  The second of five 20-mile laps is going to be brutal (first and last laps will be in the morning and two at night, so it should be fairly comfortable then)
