I had high hopes for this one, aiming for a win, but I gave it my all today, and I’m proud of that. Fueling was on point (a gel every 20 mins), no bathroom breaks (huge win!), I was well-rested.

The race started strong for me, but my legs lacked their usual spring, likely due to the elevation and lingering post-COVID fatigue. There were no easy miles today, but my focus kept me pushing through. Past race experiences helped a ton, and I stayed in the moment throughout.

Training this past month wasn’t ideal—travel, rough Midwest winter weather, and a bout with COVID all took a toll. I’m happy with my performance though. The camaraderie on the course, with runners cheering each other on, was a highlight and made the tough day special for me.

In the end, I’m pleased: 4th overall, 1st in my age group, a Sub 3 and a BQ. 

One unique note—the course was about 0.8 miles short due to a misplaced turnaround point, causing the first 7 or so runners to be turned back early. The RD quickly scrambled at the track, instructing runners to keep circling until their watches hit the marathon distance. Major props to him for recognizing the error, communicating effectively, and making an on-the-spot adjustment to ensure fairness. I knew I was comfortably in 4th when I hit the track, so I’m confident in my results and finish time. Yikes, what a headache that must’ve been for him!

Thanks as always to the RD, organizers, sponsors, and volunteers for putting on this event. Thanks too to all the participants for their camaraderie, cheers, words of encouragement, smiles, and thumbs up— it helped me particularly today to really lean into the running community🥰. And a special thanks to my 14 year old dog, Jarvis, for making the journey with us to Las Cruces, the kisses when I returned with my medal, and of course to my husband Mark for supporting my 50 state endeavor, competitive aspirations, and for always being there for me at the start and finish of every race. I’m incredibly lucky. ♥️
