I had a half day free before needing to return home so I decided to detour an hour north from Rifle to scope out the South Fork of the White River for an upcoming packraft mission. Carl's internet sleuthing had already shown this area to be pretty cool, but in reality it was better than I ever imagined! A beautiful trail winds it's way between crags of granite and limestone, through huge grassy meadows and stands of aspens and pondos, and above all, along the blue green waters of the amazing South Fork!

It looked like there was just enough water to scrape my way down in a boat so I loaded up the packraft and hiked up about 3.5 miles before putting in and floating back to the campground. Mostly class II with a very cool granite gorge section that cruxed out at probably class IV+. I portaged the crux but paddled everything else and arrived at the campground extremely stoked to get back out there again and hike/paddle the entire thing!
