a lot of mixed emotions about how today and the past several weeks leading up to it unfolded but wanted to give a virtual fistbump congratulations to the new High Sierra 50M CR holder, Zach Sonoga. he had the race I had in 2009 but pulled off something I always dreamed of but never quite accomplished: cracking the 7 hour barrier. he reminds me of my younger self: quietly holed up in Rock Creek Canyon, either at the resort working, or off chasing mountain running dreams. it seems like everytime I talked to him at the resort the past few years he had another story of an epic ultra blowup. he obviously figured some things out! I just wish I could have put up a more worthy fight.
I'm reminded of what a 40-something Tom Nielsen said to my twentysomething self after  my first High Sierra 50M in 1999: "I know the time is coming to pass the torch, but I ain't ready." The truth is we 'lifers' never really are, but we don't get to make that decision anyway; it just happens.
Congrats to everyone that got it done out there today.
