Fun two-peak outing with Shannon and Yelly. The trails in this area range from good stock-use trails to basically nonexistent. Some comments:
- I'd recommend taking the shortcut on both the north and south side of the first climb from the Jerkey Meadows trailhead, it's not too brushy or steep.
- After there, there is a short section of deadfall down to Grey Meadow, but not too bad, and then a so-so section after Clicks Creek for a bit before the trail completely disappears in a field of deadfall on the other side of the Little Kern River in what the map calls Sagebrush Gulch.
- 32E02 is smooth sailing to Lion Meadows.
- Beyond Lion Meadows you'll find only a faint tread at times, with a large section of deadfall where the trail nears Sheep Creek. This is a long, hot climb, made worse by the nonexistent trail, but it's manageable (though slow). The brush isn't too bad, at least.
- We chose the Lion Creek route because Lindsey Jackson said the trail up Deep Creek was horrible. That said, the Lion Creek route is also quite bad! The trail only exists sporadically, and the lowest 1,000' or so are mostly covered in deadfall. The Deep Creek route didn't look too bad from above, but I couldn't really get eyes on the entire thing, so until someone heads out and does both, we won't really know, and we weren't willing to risk our ascents for it!
- The climb of Angora from the saddle northwest of the peak is easy, just a bit of sidehilling and then a bit of climbing.
- We camped at the highest campsite along Rattlesnake Creek, which was not terribly buggy and had flowing water (and a cute adolescent bear!).
- We tried to follow the trail to Coyote Peaks, which was again an exercise in futility.
- On the return we just headed directly from Point 10562 to camp, which saved us a fair bit of time. It would be steep going up, but that's the only real difficulty. It's probably still faster on the ascent than the trail.
- After packing up and eating we followed Romain's shortcut on the way down Lion Creek which saved us tons of time over the "trail". The steepest section in the middle is a tad tricky, but not terrible.
- After a long hot walk through the forest we were at the car at like 6, making 12 hours Saturday and 12.5 Sunday.
- Glad to get these two done! They were not really "highlight reel" peaks! That said, the walk along the crest south of Coyote Peaks and the climb up to the summit were fun.
