Woof! I’ve never spent so long in the pain cave. It was mega hot and exposed the first half. The first climb wrecked me and I was a ball of cramps by crew aid 1 at 13.5mi and into the cave I went. I had to totally adjust the nutrition plan, and with my crew only able to access half of the crew aids I had to rely on drop bags, aid food, and my mental game to stay on top of it. At the half way point turnaround I wanted to drop. Instead I took a half hour break to eat a bunch and tried to massage the hams and quads. I was not going to just throw in the towel though, so I got back out there and adjusted the mental to thrive in the cave, boom rebound! Once the sun started setting and the mental game was dialed I put in work on the back half picking off over 20 people between mile 48-83. Held my ground and stuck it out for a very proud 7th place in 22:04. It wasn’t the day I wanted but it was the day I needed. The time in the pain cave was truly amazing and I’m so so grateful to get that opportunity to work so hard. The race was awesome, aid stations were a blast and everyone was so fun to be around! 10/10 would recommend bighorn 100! Super beautiful and challenging race with some new to me elements of heat racing!
