Solid race this morning. Controversial opinion, I like the new course. Couldn't remember what I ran last year, was hoping for 26:30-26:40 and came up a little short, but still a good race. 

Super packed start, definitely didn't get out super quick, but maybe (?) that is for the best. Felt pretty strong and a little surprised coming through the mile in 5:12, only to feel a bit disheartened coming through the second in 5:30. Latched on fairly well to the group just ahead once Jose passed me, and hung there from about 1.7 (guesstimate) to the finish. A few people passed me, but I think I passed a few more. Had a solid mid-race with a pair of 5:23s for miles three and four. The last road being nearly fully exposed wasn't ideal, but don't think it was that bad. Used the slight incline with about 1k to go to start moving, or at least increase the effort as most of the guys were slowing a bit there. One guy, Benny P, maintained the gap though. 

I passed Jose with about 600m to go, and came up on Benny with about 350m to go. Knew he'd surge when he saw me, so made my presence known to force a move. It worked and he surged then. I hung just slightly back, waiting to make my move until after we we made the turn into the school parking lot and pushed hard with probably 80m to go. Flew by him, but he came back in the last 30m or so. He may (most definitely) nipped me at the line, but I got him by 0.4 seconds on net time, so take that. Seriously good race though. 

Closed in 5:19, with the last 0.04/5 miles in 9.9 seconds (sub-4 pace) so I can't complain there. Results at the race had me finish at 26:58.1, while RaceWire is displaying 26:56. Either way, I ran 26:48 last year for 50th, so to be 8-10 seconds slower, but 26 spots back while the leaders were about 40s slower than last year is quite impressive. 

Training admittedly hasn't been great. Certainly not bad, but with a mountain race, a track meet, and a road race all within the past 5 weeks and a marathon looming in three weeks time, I'm certainly not specified in any discipline. Certainly won't complain with the day as it was great to actually have a scoring GCS team and what I believe to be a bit of a cushion built for myself in the ATR series.
