McKeller Hut - Routeburn Flats

What a day on the Routeburn Track. After the pouring rain last night I was very happy to wake up to clear skies this morning. We got an early start and gained most of our elevation during a beautiful, sunny morning and were afforded some gorgeous view along the way. The dark clouds started to roll in midday again today and we had an extremely wet afternoon — but no less beautiful. Luckily the Routeburn has so much infrastructure on it (backcountry huts, warming shelters, etc) we were able to get out of the wind and rain intermittently throughout the afternoon which kept my spirits up. I was also very grateful not to miss out on all of the views in the second part of the day despite the awful weather… in fact, the moody skies added a pretty beautiful element to these dramatic landscapes. We’re in a very wet tent tonight and pretty much everything we have with us is soggy at this point so it will be nice to head into town for a hot shower and very much needed laundry tomorrow.
